Saint Gregory known as Gregory the Great was a Pope and a Doctor in 4th century Rome. He became a monk at 35 years old and later became one of the most influential writers of the Middle Ages. In 590 he was elected pope. Of his many great deeds, he was responsible for sending missionaries to England which lead to their conversion to Christianity.
A great many of his works and writing have survived as well as the term ‘Gregorian chant’ for his influence on church music. He is known as “The Great” being the last of the traditional Latin Doctors of the Church and is considered the father of the medieval papacy.
Saint Gregory’s feast day is celebrated on September 3rd.
