Saint Joseph was the husband of the Virgin Mary and foster-father of Jesus Christ. He was of the house of David, a builder/carpenter by trade.
He was betrothed to Mary and became alarmed by the pregnancy before an angel told him the pregnancy was “by the Holy Spirit”. He was with Mary when Jesus was born in Bethlehem and when the Magi later visited.
Declared the patron of families and happy homes and is portrayed with a white lily representing purity. It’s not known when he died but since he was an old man when married Mary, it is assumed he died before the Jesus’ crucifixion.
His feast day is celebrated on March 19th and May 1st.
